Week 1

As per usual, this site depends on the availability of a network and working computer at the BsAs end.  Once again, David tried to get the Acer Aspire One Netbook ready for the trip, only to discover once again that this machine has disk drive problems if it is used as a laptop, i.e. on any surface other than a flat table or desk.  So once again, we will try to use a Macbook running Bootcamp.

David's driver to Logan was a former Honduran Intelligence officer.  Interesting stories about Ollie North.

Made it out of Boston, New York before the snow arrived.  The plane to BsAs was completely jammed, many USA students going to study abroad.  David's neighbor was an expatriate American, going back to her home in northern Argentina, a 6 hour drive from BsAs.  An English teacher, she had many opinions about Argentinean attitudes towards scholastic endeavor.  It's who you know, not what you know.

Arrived to a hot humid Buenos Aires, the above degrees are in centigrade.  A downtown rally for la Presidenta jammed traffic, the taxi driver says that poorer folks have to show up and get checked off if they want to continue receiving unemployment checks.

lunes, 2-marzo

David's apartment is a small privately owned room in a sort-of-a-hotel in a fairly ritzy part of Recoleta.  A traditional light Argentinean breakfast costs an inflated  U$9 at a local restaurant, and It's a long walk to the nearest supermarket, but it's a big supermarket.  The street has no bus traffic, the apartment is on the 8'th floor, and the loudest noise is the air conditioner!

After a morning thunderstorm, a walk around familiar haunts.  After lunch at Buller's it's back to the apartment, where CNN Español showed New England scenes of falling snow and falling stock markets.  Can't leave you guys alone for a minute.

martes, 3-marzo

David is taking a light school load on this trip.  Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 hours per day, 3 weeks.  The school is a bit of a hike.  About 1 hour each way.  With about 15 lbs. of backpack.  In a warm and humid Buenos Aires.

At right find la profesora Natalia, a law student who makes a living teaching Spanish and doing English translations.  Natalia says this will be the first and last time we see her as a brunette - she is switching back to her natural blonde for Thursday.  Tune in for la transformación.

miercoles, 4-marzo

Wednesday

Rain. High: 24 °C . Wind South 28 km/h . Chance of precipitation 100% (water equivalent of 95.62 mm).

That's a lot of millimeters.  Big story in today's paper - the value of the dollar (in pesos) is rising so quickly that people are standing in line to buy them.  In a poll, 75% think the dollar is the best investment around.

jueves, 5-marzo

The school is located in a large indoor mall in the center of town.  It turns out there's a vegetarian restaurant two floors below.  Fixed price, lunch only, excellent and bounteous buffet.  Run by Seventh-Day Adventists, and the beer selection is a bit light, but no propaganda anywhere.  And although the food is spectacularly healthy, many of the diners seem to be older and plumper folks, like David.

viernes - sabado, 6-7 marzo

Some complaints about an inattentive webmeister.  Here is David's general schedule:

  1. wake up
  2. do some boring things
  3. go to sleep

Not necessarily in that order.
