2-diciembre

David's last week in Mérida started with a dull day.  Sunny and hot.  David doesn't like sunny and hot, and stayed on the balcony reading a Dick Francis novel in Spanish.  Dull day, dull boy.  This is what retirement is supposed to be about!

3-diciembre

Although David was not able to achieve a hot shower this AM, he is in hot water with the lady of the house.  It seems that she returned from visiting her parents last night around 10:30 PM.  Unfortunately, she had forgotten her key, but no amount of yelling for David or ringing the doorbell managed to wake him up.  ¡Estúpido!  She spent the night trying to sleep in her car.

David's new guide for the week is Fernando, who is an Anthropology student at a local university.  As an example of what a professional anthropologist might do, Fernando talked about the sociological problems in some Mexican states in pueblos with multiple indigenous groups with different lanugages, customs and resource needs.  Fernando is a big fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, which are themselves interesting anthropological oddities.

4-diciembre

In the morning David was chatting with the lady of the house, complaining about the -6 degrees (C) temperature in Boston.  Where is the global warming? - David asked.  Right here! - said the señora.

David reminded his teacher Mercy today that there were only 4 more days of abject humiliation left.  Oh no - laughed Mercy - You're not unusual: I've had lots of students who were as dumb as a bag of hammers. (Una bolsa lleno de martillos.)

David and Fernando went to Iladios for mucho genuine Yucatán comida.  All the waiters were dressed as Santa's helpers.  When he got home, David picked up his last load of laundry from the lavandería, where everybody knows him by name and wished him a happy Navidad.

5-diciembre

David and his teacher were chatting about local customs, and Mercy said that Yucatános tend to be fairly straight-laced.  Spring-break foreign students can be a little wild, though.  Mercy said that she saw a shocking DVD showing  NorteAmericano college co-eds dancing naked in Cancun.  David asked if this DVD might help him with his Spanish studies.  Mercy doesn't seem to understand that education is no laughing matter!

6-diciembre

David left school right after classes to treat a case of the sniffles.  In the evening, the host family threw a light dinner party for the soon-to-be-back-in-the-land-of-eternal-cold. A typical modern scene:  The three "boys" talking about new technologies, passing around a new Blackberry, while the parents look vaguely puzzled.  Everybody talked slow, simple Spanish to David, who managed to nod at the right times, thus proving that actual comprehension is grossly overrated.  Of course, any manager knows this already!

7-diciembre

Last day of school, no more books, no more teachers, dirty looks ...  David and classmates headed off to Elarios for a festive lunch of just about every Yucatán food.  Including pickled pigs ears, which is beyond comprehension, digestion and any other word that rhymes with those other two.  .

Handshakes, hugs and smootches, and reminders that if David is ever visiting Victoria, B.C., to give a call so they have time to draw the blinds and pretend that nobody is home.

Tomorrow it's back to Boston, where ...
